You would need to rework all of the files to do with dying and spawning to accomplish that (to save the gear through that and stop the DB from updating to no gear when they respawn).

Which happen to be the files to do with dying and spawing (and gear). That would work though, getUnitLoadout in a public variable getting set on death, setUnitLoadOut and resetting that var when they spawn. But if they left the server, it may not have synced to the DB at that point.
